Diction

Achebe's book entitled Things Fall Apart, he uses many different types of words, whether they are "formal" or "slang". In chapter 1, there are several examples of how he does this. When he is explaining what Okonkwo looks like, his word choice is very detailed and one can really imagine what he looks like, for example "He was tall and huge, and his bushy eyebrows and wide nose gave him a very severe look" (Achebe 1). The words that have been highlighted resemble how he chooses to explain what Okonkwo looks like.

"whenever he saw a dead man's mouth he saw the folly of not eating what one had in one's lifetime" (Achebe 4).
